DEPARTMENT OF MECHANICAL ENGINEERING
Department of Mechanical Engineering of Guru Kashi University is dedicated to produce class one mechanical engineers to fit and function in the current technically sophisticated environment. We are highly concerned with the appropriate involvement of laboratories and workshops and also motivate the students to attend maximum classes. Class lectures are designed to drag the students in to the subject and encourage them to intact with the subject teacher in the class room.
Department of Mechanical Engineering is looking forward to further strengthening the teaching learning process, strong institute – industry interaction, faculty development, increased use of web based learning with the objective of imparting world class quality technical education along with career counseling and personality development programmes. Research activities shall also be initiated laying stress on creativity and innovation.

The department has well furnished Lecture Halls, Drawing Halls & Tutorial Rooms to give the students a conducive environment for learning. A seminar hall with all the modern technical audio-visual aids, such as L.C.D. Projector, O.H.P. and many more, are provided by the department. As per the course curriculum of PTU, there are the following laboratories in the department:
STRENGTH OF MATERIALS (SOM) LAB
SOM lab includes the experimental set-ups/machines for testing the strength of engineering materials, used in various applications. Heavy industrial use machines like Universal Testing Machine, Impact Testing Machine, Hardness Testing Machine etc. are available in the lab.
ENGINEERING MATERIALS & METALLURGY (EMM) LAB
EMM Lab is also an important part of Mechanical Engineering. The metallurgical properties of the engineering materials are studied in this lab. Equipments like Jominy End-quench test machine, Muffle Furnace, Polishing Machine, Metallurgical Microscope etc. are available in the lab for carrying out the experiments, concerned with this lab.
WORKSHOP SECTIONMechanical Department also has Workshop Section, where the students get the practical knowledge besides the theoretical part of the subject. The workshop has following eight sub-sections namely

- Machine Shop
- Foundry Shop
- Smith Shop
- Carpentry Shop
- Sheet-metal Shop
- Fitting Shop
- Welding Shop
Each sub-section of the workshop has the ultra-modern machines & equipments such as Centre Lathe Machines, Milling Machines, Power Hacksaws, Surface Grinding Machines, Rolling & Bending Machines, Hearth Furnaces, Arc-Welding, Gas Welding & MIG-Welding Machines etc.
MANUFACTURING PROCESSES (MP) LAB
Manufacturing Facilities, which are required to machine/finish any engineering material, are available in this lab. Heavy Industrial use machines like Milling Machines, Lathe Machines, Surface Grinders, Shaper, different types of Welding Machines, Complete Casting Manufacturing Machines and equipments etc. are available in this lab.
THEORY OF MACHINES (TOM) LAB
Theory of Machine course is offered to Degree students and is an important part of the curriculum through which the students are able to understand theory and practical skills. Theory of machine laboratory contains equipments both in the form of working and non-working models. Universal governor apparatus, balancing machine, motorized gyroscope, Different types of cams, Different types of gears and Oldham’s coupling are available in the lab.
HEAT TRANSFER LAB
The aim of the lab is to give a practical insight to degree students for various modes of Heat transfer in same metals, different metal and water. The apparatus give us method to calculate heat transfer co-efficient and constants in different mode of Heat transfer.
Each laboratory is equipped with latest modern equipments & software such as CNC machines, Profile Projector, Universal Testing Machine, different Test Rigs, Cut-sectional Models, Latest Configuration Computers networked with each other, ‘Solid Works’ Designing Software and many more.
APPLIED THERMODYNAMICS LAB
It is the one of important lab for diploma & degree students for their course curriculum. The aim to establish this laboratory was to impart practical training in the field of I.C. Engine & Thermal Engg. like determination of BHP, IHP, thermal efficiency, fuel consumption, air consumption, and gas emission analyzing of the engine by using the engine test rigs and gas emission analyzer. It also provides knowledge to students about various types of Boilers and engine models.
FLUID MECHANICS LAB
Fluids are a key element of study for many engineering disciplines. Clear visual appreciation of the principles of fluid mechanics is the objective of our designs combined with instrumentation which allows a full range of experimental work to be completed.
FLUID MACHINERY LABIt has a wide range of equipments such as Hydraulic Turbines like Francis Turbine, Hydraulic Pumps like Reciprocating Pump test rig and other experimental equipments include Hydraulic Ram.
MECHANICAL VIBRATIONS LAB
This lab is provided with equipments to perform the experiments of Vibrations such as to determine the natural frequency of undammed free vibrations, damped vibrations, torsional vibrations of single rotor system and double pendulum system. Students also study the forced vibrations. Some more equipment such as Three Rotor torsion System, Coupled Pitching and Bouncing Motion Machine are being procured.
MECHANICAL MEASUREMENTS & METROLOGY LAB
Metrology has a great importance in quality assurance. The aim to establish this laboratory is to provide practical training in the field of various types of standards & measurement. The laboratory has conventional, equipments used in metrology. This laboratory is being used for practical to degree students.
MACHINE DESIGN LAB. INDUSTRIAL AUTOMATION & ROBOTICS LAB. CAD / CAM LABIt is one of the important laboratories for diploma ↦ degree students for their curriculum. The aim to establish this laboratory for practical training in the field of CAD (Computer Aided Drawing).
COMPUTER GRAPHICS AND NUMERICAL METHODS LAB
Computer & Automation is established to cater to the computational needs of B. Tech., M.Tech. & research students of Mechanical Engineering Department. Students visit this centre for, honing their skills in mastering Computer Aided Design software, computing numerical solutions and for their dissertation & project works. All systems are placed on LAN and are provided with Internet connectivity.
REFRIGERATION & AIR CONDITIONING LAB
The aim of the lab is to give a practical insight to certificate, Diploma students for equipments running on Vapor compression cycle. Water cooler and cooling Tower apparatus has been designed for calculation of C.O.P. and Efficiency of the system. And cut section model of all types of compressors, Air conditioners and condensers are used to give thorough knowledge of their parts, working and maintenance.
